		Kemper®* provides personal automobile, homeowners, inland marine, boat owners, dwelling fire and personal umbrella insurance to preferred and standard-risk customers. Kemper's premier product, the Package Plus, is a combined automobile and homeowners insurance policy that provides the convenience of one transaction and billing process to fulfill individual insurance needs. Kemper operates in approximately 39 states and has over 2,500 independent agents as its sales force.

Lumbermens continues to use the name, "Kemper Insurance Companies", in connection with its operations, which are distinct from, and not to be confused with, Unitrin's Kemper business segment.

		Unitrin Specialty provides personal and commercial, nonstandard automobile insurance to individuals and businesses through approximately 8,000 independent agents/brokers in 24 states. Unitrin Specialty has approximately 770 employees in three offices (Dallas, Texas; Woodland Hills, California; and Salem, Oregon) and is committed to becoming the friendly, people-focused automobile insurance company, while growing profitably through strong relationships with our agents. Unitrin Specialty's primary emphasis is on becoming the most valued non-standard automobile insurance company in the independent agent market.

		Unitrin Direct markets auto and homeowners insurance primarily through direct mail, Web insurance portals, "click- throughs," its own Web site and radio advertising. In addition, Merastar Insurance Company specializes in the sale of personal automobile and homeowners insurance through employer-sponsored voluntary benefit programs. The Unitrin Direct segment actively sells auto insurance in every state in the U.S. with the exception of Alaska, Hawaii and Massachusetts. Unitrin Direct writes a broad spectrum of personal auto insurance risks ranging from preferred to non-standard private passenger auto customers. The overall business strategy of Unitrin Direct places great emphasis on competitive pricing and quality customer service.


		The Career Agency Companies, United Insurance, Union National, and Reliable Life, employ a field force of nearly 2,700 career agents in 25 states. Our family of career agents provide service to customers in their homes and offer personalized, affordable insurance products developed for individuals and families of modest means. The St. Louis-based home office staff of over 400 supports the efforts of the agents and field management.

		Reserve National is our Oklahoma City-based independent agency company that distributes its products in 31 states through a network of approximately 240 independent agents and provides accident and health insurance coverages to individuals and small business owners primarily in rural areas with limited access to the benefits plans of larger markets. Reserve National offers products such as scheduled benefit hospitalization and surgical plans, critical illness, home health care, first-occurrence cancer and heart-attack policies and Medicare supplement insurance.

		Fireside Bank®, based in Pleasanton, California, was engaged in the automobile finance business. Fireside Bank is organized under California law as an industrial bank and its deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (the "FDIC"). Unitrin announced on March 24, 2009, that Fireside Bank suspended all new lending activity as part of a plan to exit the automobile finance business. The exit plan envisions an orderly wind-down of Fireside's operations over the next several years. Fireside will continue to collect outstanding loan balances and make interest payments and redemptions on outstanding certificates of deposit in the ordinary course of business.
